Laurie Lipton draws as if time were something to be defeated one tiny line at a time. Thousands of patient graphite strokes, each laid down by hand, build tones as soft as breath and details so fine they seem to hold their own light. Nothing in her work is hurried. Her drawings ask for slow looking, and they reward it with new details each time. Here, a single original drawing becomes a vision of love and mortality, rendered with a devotion that has become her signature.
We answered her pencil with fire and silver. The silversmith’s hands shaped the frame, pulling the metal into prongs, bezels and a pearl-bearing chain, then darkening it until it glowed like old moonlight. Tiny cast skulls keep watch around the edge, each one sculpted and soldered in place. Beneath crystal glass, the drawing rests safe and luminous, ready to be worn close to the heart. Made by Ossua et Acroamata in collaboration with Laurie Lipton, Mother and Child is strictly one of a kind: one drawing, one frame, one chain, one keeper. When it leaves us, it will not come again.
